  5. Liquid Amino Acids – BCAA shots and concentrates

Liquid amino acids, whether in the form of a BCAA shot or a one-litre concentrate, promise one main thing – no mixing required. However, it is not the form that determines effectiveness, but rather how much active ingredient is in a single dose. We will show you how to calculate this in ten seconds and when a liquid form is worth it.

What are liquid amino acids

Liquid amino acids contain the same substances (amino acids) you would find in powder or capsule form elsewhere – just pre-dissolved in water, flavoured, and ready to drink. It is a packaging format, not a special category of active ingredients.

Therefore, this category includes products with very different compositions: BCAA concentrates, liquid arginine and AAKG, complex amino acids, as well as carbonated ready-to-drink beverages with vitamins. They all have one thing in common: you don't need to mix anything.

This differentiates them from the ready-to-drink category only partially, as some products overlap. However, liquid amino acids are measured in doses, whereas you typically drink an entire ready-to-drink beverage.

Do liquid amino acids absorb faster?

Compared to tablets and capsules: Yes. Solid forms must first be broken down in the stomach before the contents can be absorbed – for standard tablets, clinical measurements show this takes roughly 10 to 25 minutes. Liquid forms bypass this step.

Compared to powder mixed in water: No. Once you dissolve the powder, you have exactly the same thing in your shaker as in a shot – an amino acid solution. We do not have peer-reviewed literature providing a direct comparison of liquid and powder forms in the same dose, but physiologically, there is no reason why they would differ.

What truly determines absorption speed is the free-form state of the amino acids. These do not require digestion and appear in the blood quickly, which is why they are recommended around training sessions (Ferrando et al., 2023). However, you will find the same free-form amino acids in both powders and liquids.

Practical conclusion: you buy the liquid form for convenience, not for better efficacy. Which is a perfectly legitimate reason – as long as you know what you are paying for.

Three types you will find in this category

TypeHow it worksBest forCost per dose
Concentrate (500–1,000 ml)Measure the dose with a scoop/capRegular home use, best price/performance ratio in the category💰💰
Shot / ampoule (60–90 ml)One ampoule = one doseTravel, training away from home, zero measuring💰💰
Ready-to-drink (330 ml, often carbonated)Drink the whole thing, usually includes vitamins or caffeineA tasty alternative to water, sipping during training💰💰💰

Concentrates make the most sense if you take amino acids regularly at home. The disadvantage is the need for measuring and the fact that they have limited shelf life once opened – for an opened bottle, expect a shelf life of a few weeks; exact details can be found on the label.

Shots are unbeatable for travel. However, you pay for the convenience: the price per gram of active ingredient is usually significantly higher than for concentrates or powders.

Ready-to-drink BCAA beverages solve a slightly different need – taste and hydration. Sipping a flavoured amino acid drink during training instead of plain water is a valid reason for purchase, just don't confuse its role: it is more about hydration with a bonus than a supplement providing a threshold dose.

How to calculate exactly what you are getting in ten seconds

The numbers on concentrate labels are typically for the entire bottle, not per dose. Let’s look at a real product from our range: Nutrend BCAA Liquid 80,000 mg, 1,000 ml.

Steps:

01

Find the total content of the active ingredient on the label (80,000 mg of BCAA per 1,000 ml).

02

Divide this by the volume in millilitres (80,000 ÷ 1,000 = 80 mg per 1 ml).

03

Multiply by the recommended dose in ml.

The result: the manufacturer's recommended dose is 40 ml before training and 40 ml after, a maximum of 80 ml per day. One 40 ml dose = 3.2 g of BCAA, the whole day with both doses = 6.4 g of BCAA. Yet, the commonly recommended single portion of BCAA is around 5–10 g – so one dose of this specific product is below the lower threshold, and you only reach the recommended range when you combine both daily doses.

In short, the label with the large "80,000 mg" figure must not be read as a single dose. We recommend doing the same arithmetic for any product in the category, because the ratio of concentration to actual dosage varies between brands.

For ready-to-drink beverages, the BCAA content is usually only a few grams per can. That is fine for taste and hydration, not for a threshold dose.

Pro tip: Use the same calculation to compare price. Divide the price of the package by the number of grams of the active ingredient and you will see how much a gram costs you. The liquid form is generally more expensive than powder – in the case of shots, sometimes several times over.

Who is the liquid form suitable for (and who is it not)

It makes sense if:

you are often away from home and mixing a drink is a hassle for you,

you travel or train outdoors and want one BCAA shot in your pocket,

you hate the taste of powdered amino acids or dislike clumps,

you need a quick dose before training without preparation,

you want a flavoured drink instead of water during long training sessions.

Powder will likely serve you better if:

you are cost-conscious regarding price per dose – powder is significantly cheaper per gram of active ingredient,

you need higher doses (for example, EAA around 10–15 g per serving); in liquid form, you would have to consume an impractical amount,

you want a clean composition without sweeteners – virtually all liquid products are flavoured and sweetened.

If you want to test the taste and tolerance first, start with one ampoule or can – it is cheaper than a litre concentrate that you might end up disliking.

What to look out for when choosing

1

Product base

For some cheaper liquid concentrates, a portion of the content is made up of hydrolysed collagen. Collagen does not contain tryptophan and is low in leucine, so it lacks the complete spectrum needed for building muscle protein (Schaafsma, 2000) – it is just a different type of raw material, not an illegal or low-quality additive.

We discuss this in more detail under beef amino acids. You can easily check for the presence of collagen in the filters of our product listings.

2

Caffeine

Some ready-to-drink beverages in this category contain caffeine. According to EFSA, single doses of up to 200 mg and daily intakes of up to 400 mg do not pose a risk for healthy adults; for pregnant women, the recommended limit is 200 mg per day (EFSA, 2015). However, do not blindly rely on the fact that a sports supplement is automatically within the limit. Check the quantity on the specific label and account for coffee, tea, and pre-workout supplements – caffeine adds up.

3

Sweeteners

Most liquid products contain sucralose or acesulfame potassium. Both are approved and safe in the EU when daily limits are followed, but sensitive digestive systems may sometimes react to them. If sweeteners are not a concern for you, there is no reason to avoid them.

4

Storage after opening

Liquid concentrates have a limited shelf life after opening – this problem does not arise with powder. Follow the instructions on the packaging.

5

Don't just look at the volume

A litre bottle looks like a better deal than 200 g of powder. But it is the gram of active substance that counts, not the millilitre of liquid.

How to choose the best liquid amino acids? Summary

Liquid amino acids are about convenience, not higher efficacy. They absorb faster than tablets and capsules, but offer no advantage over mixed powder. You will make the right choice when you stop looking at the large number on the package and calculate the dose per serving – for BCAA, aim for 5–10 g; for EAA, 6–15 g; and for arginine, 3–9 g per day. Then simply choose the format according to your routine: concentrate for home, BCAA shot for travel, ready-to-drink for taste during training.

At BodyWorld.eu you will find liquid amino acids from brands such as Nutrend, BioTech USA, Scitec Nutrition, NOCCO, Amix, and Extrifit – from litre concentrates to practical shots and sugar-free carbonated drinks. Everything is in stock, with shipping from the Czech Republic and free shipping on qualifying orders. A complete overview of all types can be found in the amino acids and BCAA category – and don't forget to check our section on latest offers and discounts.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Are liquid amino acids better than powder?

They are neither better nor worse – they are more convenient. Compared to tablets and capsules, they absorb faster because the solid form does not need to break down. Compared to powder mixed in water, don't expect any difference: dissolved powder is the same solution as the contents of an ampoule. Powder is cheaper per gram of active ingredient. Decide based on your lifestyle and price, not on speed.

How many liquid amino acids per day?

Follow the dose of the active ingredient, not the volume. For BCAA, a common portion is 5–10 g, for EAA 6–15 g, and for arginine 3–9 g per day. The content on the packaging is usually stated for the entire package – divide it by the volume to find the amount per millilitre, and then multiply by the recommended dose.

What is a BCAA shot?

A BCAA shot is a single-use ampoule (typically 60–90 ml) with dissolved BCAA amino acids – no mixing, ready to drink immediately. The active ingredient content varies between brands, usually ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 mg of BCAA per ampoule. It is a more expensive form than powder or concentrate, but the most convenient for travel and training away from home.

When to take liquid amino acids?

Most often before or during training, when their rapid availability and the fact that you don't have to mix anything come in handy. The exact minute is not decisive – total daily protein and amino acid intake is more important than the timing of a single dose (Kerksick et al., 2017). Ampoules are also useful during long breaks between meals.

Do liquid amino acids contain sugar?

Most products in this category are sugar-free and sweetened with sucralose or acesulfame potassium. However, some ready-to-drink beverages may contain small amounts of sugar or fructose. You will always find specific data in the nutritional values table for the selected product; you can check for the presence of individual ingredients using the filters.

Are liquid amino acids suitable for weight loss?

Yes, they are, because they usually have a low energy value and provide amino acids with virtually zero calories. However, they do not replace a caloric deficit or sufficient protein intake, which remain the main prerequisites for weight loss while maintaining muscle mass. Be careful with sugary ready-to-drink beverages – count those towards your daily calorie deficit.

How long do liquid amino acids last after opening?

A shorter time than powder. An opened concentrate usually belongs in the refrigerator and should be consumed within a few weeks – exact information can be found on the packaging of the specific product. Unopened ampoules and cans have a standard shelf life. If you take amino acids irregularly, a pack of shots may be more practical than a litre bottle.

Can I mix liquid amino acids with other supplements?

Yes, they are commonly combined with, for example, creatine or electrolytes. However, monitor the total daily intake of individual substances so that you do not exceed them from multiple sources at once – this applies especially to caffeine, which is also present in ready-to-drink beverages and pre-workout supplements.
