Beef amino acids (beef amino) are a genuine gym classic. Two questions always come up: how much is real meat and how much is connective tissue? And should I be taking them at all? We'll show you how to tell from the label in just a few seconds.
What are beef amino acids?
Beef amino acids are a dietary supplement made from hydrolysed beef protein. Hydrolysis is a process where protein is enzymatically broken down into shorter chains—peptides and free amino acids. That's why products in this category are often called beef peptides. Simply put: the manufacturer has done some of the digestive work for you, meaning the content is absorbed faster and is usually easier on the stomach.
They are almost always sold in tablets or capsules, with no flavouring or sweeteners. This differs from beef protein powders, which are flavoured and dosed by the tens of grams as a full-fledged source of protein.
Tip: Hydrolysed whey protein (WPH) also undergoes hydrolysis—the difference is the protein source and the fact that it is mixed into a drink. If you are looking for a fast-absorbing protein with a complete amino acid profile, start there.
Amino acid profile: What to look for on the label
Not every "beef" supplement comes from muscle meat. Beef raw material for supplements is sourced from two different parts of the animal, and each has a completely different composition:
From muscle meat – i.e., from the meat itself. The profile resembles a steak: lots of leucine, plenty of BCAA, and a complete spectrum of essential amino acids.
From connective tissues – skin, tendons, bones. The primary protein here is collagen, the composition of which differs fundamentally from muscle tissue.
Both raw materials are legally labelled as beef protein. You won't know the difference from the front of the packaging. But you will in the nutrition facts table—and you only need three data points to tell.
Hydroxyproline: The most reliable clue
Hydroxyproline is an amino acid that is found almost exclusively in collagen. The body does not use it as a building block elsewhere—it is formed through the post-translational modification of another amino acid directly within the finished collagen fibre. In other words: without collagen, hydroxyproline cannot exist. This is precisely why laboratories use it as a benchmark for collagen content—and why it is so useful for you. The rule is simple: if hydroxyproline is in the table, you are buying a product with a significant collagen component.
Is that good or bad? Neither—it depends on your goal. For muscle building, it is a disadvantage because collagen lacks the amino acids that muscles require. For tendons, ligaments, and skin, it is exactly the right material. We will break down both below.
In products within this category, it accounts for 519 mg or 829 mg per serving—roughly 9 to 10 % of all amino acids in the serving. By comparison, you would look in vain for hydroxyproline in whey protein; it contains virtually none. It is not, therefore, a trace amount, but a noticeable portion of what you are buying.
The glycine – proline – hydroxyproline trio
Collagen has a characteristic composition: every third amino acid in it is glycine, and together with proline and hydroxyproline, they make up about 57 % of all amino acids (Li et al., 2017). Muscle tissue does not have a profile even remotely like this.
Therefore, add up these three items in the table and compare them to the total amount of amino acids. We have calculated this for you from the tables of products in this category:

For comparison: pure collagen has this trio at 57 % of amino acids, while muscle tissue does not even come close. A result of 43–46 % therefore signifies a raw material in which the collagen component significantly predominates, even if it is not pure collagen.
Tryptophan and leucine
Collagen does not contain tryptophan—one of the nine essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own and must obtain from food. And because a protein is only as effective for muscle building as its weakest component, a single missing amino acid is enough to drop the quality rating to zero. This is exactly what happens to collagen in the internationally recognised protein quality ranking, whereas meat and dairy proteins are at the upper end of the scale (Schaafsma, 2000; Tormási et al., 2025).
Zero does not mean that the substance is useless, but rather that as a source of protein for larger muscles, it does not work on its own. We explain what it is suitable for below.
You can tell immediately from the labels: for one product in this category, tryptophan is listed as 0 mg, while for another, it is 29 mg per serving—roughly three-tenths of one percent of the total content.
And leucine—the amino acid that gives the muscle the "start building" signal—works out to 178 to 301 mg in a single serving.
How much should be in there? The position statement of the International Society of Sports Nutrition states that to fully initiate muscle protein synthesis, roughly 700 to 3,000 mg of leucine is needed per serving (Jäger et al., 2017). Beef amino acids are therefore two to four times below the lower limit. This is not a defect of the product, just clear information on what it is—and is not—suited for.

What does this mean in practice? To fully support muscle protein synthesis, the same statement recommends a serving of 20–40 g of high-quality protein. To achieve this from beef amino acids, you would have to swallow several dozen tablets at once. No one does that, and no one should.
What are beef amino acids suitable for?
The collagen profile, which does not help muscles much, is actually an advantage elsewhere. Specifically for connective tissue—to which we add glycine and a few purely practical reasons.
Connective tissue amino acids
Glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline are not "inferior" amino acids—they are the building blocks of connective tissue, i.e., tendons, ligaments, joint cartilage, and skin. These are exactly the amino acids that beef supplements provide in doses orders of magnitude higher than anything else in the profile.
Regarding collagen peptides, meta-analyses suggest a beneficial effect on tendon building and post-exercise recovery, but the certainty of evidence remains low, and results vary (Bischof et al., 2024; Kirmse et al., 2024).
Be careful with the dose, however: the studies worked with 5 to 20 g of collagen daily, and for tendons, 15 g or more. A single serving of beef amino acids provides roughly 1.3 to 3.4 g.
If your primary concern is joints and tendons, reach directly for joint support supplements or collagen, where the dosage is designed for that goal.
Glycine on its own
Glycine is the most abundant amino acid in the entire profile—1.4 to 1.6 g per serving. It is researched in connection with sleep quality, but the studies worked with 3 g before bedtime in individuals who were long-term dissatisfied with their sleep (Bannai & Kawai, 2012). One serving will not get you there. This is a finding about glycine, not about this product. Generally, when it comes to one specific amino acid in an effective dose, reach for single amino acids—there, the dosage is designed for the specific goal.
Practical advantages
No milk protein and no lactose. Products in this category are classified as containing none of the fourteen main allergens. If you have a severe allergy, read the label of the specific package anyway—some manufacturers state that the product may contain traces of allergens from the production line.
No flavouring and no sweeteners. If you dislike sucralose or acesulfame in everything mixed into water, this is a rare alternative.
Zero preparation. No shaker, no clumps, no washing bottles. You toss the tablets and capsules in your bag and take them to work, to training, or on holiday.
Virtually no calories or fat. Products often have 0 kcal, 0 g fat, and 0 g carbohydrates listed per serving in the nutrition table. They practically don't count towards your daily intake.
Who they make sense for (and who they don't)
They make sense if:
you have lactose or milk protein intolerance and are looking for an amino acid supplement without milk,
you refuse sweeteners and flavourings and want a clean product without flavour,
you are often on the road and do not want to mix drinks,
you want to support your intake of connective tissue amino acids alongside your normal diet—for example, during high training volumes when tendons and ligaments are under stress.
You probably don't need them if:
you are interested in muscle mass growth. You will not get the necessary dose of leucine from them—whey protein, lactose-free protein, or EAA amino acids with a complete spectrum are more suitable.
you are looking for a beef protein source. You will find that in the beef protein category—the powder form provides tens of grams of protein per serving. A meta-analysis of seven studies, by the way, showed that beef protein increases lean mass and lower limb strength and performs comparably to whey (Valenzuela et al., 2019).
you want a complete spectrum of amino acids in a single serving. The beef profile is skewed towards collagen—some essential amino acids are missing or present in minimal amounts. Complex amino acids offer a more balanced composition.
you are already hitting your protein intake from food and protein shakes. In that case, they add very little.
Forms, dosage, and timing
In this category, you will find two versions of the same thing: tablets and capsules. Tablets tend to be large—and that is by far the most common criticism users mention for this category. It follows from the nature of the product: for the grams of hydrolysate to fit into a daily dose, the tablet must weigh something.
Capsules are slightly easier to swallow, but even these are not small, and there are considerably more of them per dose. You pay for convenience twice here—with a larger number of pieces and a higher price.

The price difference is not cosmetic: per gram of amino acids, tablets work out roughly two to three times cheaper than capsules.
Dosage varies between products more than one might expect—therefore, always follow the information on the packaging. For tablets, it is usually 6 to 9 pieces daily; for capsules, depending on the type, 12 to 18. Always split the daily dose into two to three servings; a large one-off amount unnecessarily burdens the digestive system.
Timing is not critical for this category. They are taken between meals or with a meal, according to the specific manufacturer's recommendation. This is not a pre-workout stimulant with an immediate effect, but rather a supplement to your amino acid intake throughout the day.

Safety and legislation
Beef amino acids are well-tolerated in healthy adults when the recommended dosage is followed. Any issues are usually digestive in nature when taking a high single dose; splitting the dose or taking it with food solves this.
When to be cautious:
Kidney or liver disease – both organs are involved in amino acid metabolism; consult supplementation with a doctor.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding – manufacturers of products in this category universally label them as unsuitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Do not take them during this period without consulting a doctor.
Children and adolescents – these products are not intended for them.
Chronic medication – check suitability with a specialist.
Vitamin B6 in fortified capsules – these provide 9 mg of B6 daily (3 mg × 3 doses). The EFSA has set a safe upper limit of 12 mg daily (Turck et al., 2023). The capsules themselves are therefore fine, but with a multivitamin or magnesium with B6, you will easily approach the limit—and long-term high intake of B6 impairs nerve sensitivity.
Gelatin capsules – capsules in this category are made from beef gelatin, so they are not suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Tablets do not have this issue.

Legislative note: The EFSA has not approved any health claims for beef amino acids or collagen peptides. Approved claims ("protein contributes to the growth of muscle mass") relate to proteins and may only be used by food that is a source of them according to EU Regulation No. 432/2012. However, these products have 0 g of protein per serving in their nutritional table—they therefore do not meet the condition. How to choose beef amino acids? Summary
Beef amino acids are an honest product often sold with dishonest expectations. Built on hydrolysed beef protein with a predominance of collagen amino acids—glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline—they are suitable as an amino acid supplement for those who cannot or do not want dairy proteins, sweeteners, and mixing drinks. They are not, and cannot be, a replacement for protein for muscle growth.
Before you buy, perform three checks: is hydroxyproline in the profile? (collagen origin), how much tryptophan is there? (zero means an incomplete profile), and how much leucine is in one serving? (don't expect an effect on muscle mass below 1 g). This will tell you more about the product than the entire packaging.
