Boswellia serrata (Serrata) is a rare tree from the birch family that grows to a height of 2-8 meters. It is most often found in northern and central India and North Africa. This tree is characterized by the presence of several trunks, leaves with serrated edges, which give it its generic name, and small white flowers.
The resin that is used the most from the tree, which is taken from trees older than 8 years. Resin protects the tree from injury by healing cuts in the bark and killing pathogens present. In order to obtain the resin, growers have to break the bark, which releases the resin, which is collected in special bamboo baskets and further processed into powder or extracts. Resin is characterized by its smell, which is caused by the presence of substances called terpenes.
