However, the reality is more sobering: a single (acute) dose of arginine often fails to demonstrably increase NO levels or performance because it is largely broken down by first-pass metabolism. More consistent results are achieved through long-term use or combinations with citrulline (see below).

Arginine and blood pressure

Arginine has the strongest data regarding blood pressure. A meta-analysis of 22 studies (Shiraseb et al., 2022) found a decrease in systolic pressure by 6.4 mmHg and diastolic by 2.6 mmHg after arginine supplementation. The effect was seen in both healthy individuals and those with hypertension, and the effective dose started at ≥4g per day; benefits did not increase further above 9g/day. An older meta-analysis (Dong et al., 2011) reported a comparable decrease of 5.4 / 2.7 mmHg.

This is a mild but measurable improvement comparable to dietary adjustments.
